A World Powered By Paper!
In all the years I have been working in paper based 3D printing it never ceases to amaze me just how little expectation people have of paper! We have grown up with paper, it is such an integral part of our lives but unfortunately we are oblivious to it! And yet paper does play a key role in life by giving us an outlet for our creativity, helps us solve problems and learn about the world around us. Papers connects us in thoughtful and meaningful ways and helps us make important contributions to a more sustainable future.
But paper is simply underestimated time and again.
At Mcor we have found that when you put a paper 3D model in someone’s hand they never expect the material to be paper. They touch, feel and examine the paper model and often guess what the material might be plastic, wood, cellulose,…. But they never expect the material to be paper. Then you tell them that the part is made of, “paper” and then the magic happens – people are simply WOWed by the tactile feel, superior finish and colour quality that is evident in the model before them. So I think it is time that we stood up for paper and its spectacular capabilities and credentials – we need people to think twice and less dismissive of a material that marks the start of civilisation as we know it today.
And it would seem that I am not the only one with this notion! So when the Paper and Packaging Board (P+PB) reached out to us with regard to participating in their “Paper & Packaging – How Life Unfolds™” campaign – http://www.howlifeunfolds.com/about-us. We said, “we’re in!” The national promotional campaign promotes the paper and packaging industry as a whole rather than specific products or services, envisioning a life where paper and packaging products encourage creativity, warmth, learning, connection and innovation. I see it like a Paper.20!
As part of this campaign they will officially be taking part in South By Southwest 2017, March 10-16 2017 https://www.sxsw.com/festivals/interactive/. When most people think of innovation, they think of touch screens, mobile apps and virtual reality (VR). The Paper and Packaging Board (P+PB) want to challenge this tech-exclusive way of thinking by reminding the SXSW community of the power of paper and packaging. Their mission at SXSW is to change the way influencers think about paper and paper-based products. #PoweredByPaper, an interactive innovation gallery, will showcase some of the most modern and relevant uses of paper, paper-based packaging and cardboard products.
As part of this Mcor has been asked to participate as one of the most unusual and disruptive paper-based innovators so our models will feature at SXSW in the interactive innovation gallery.
The Paper and Packaging Board envisions a life where paper and packaging products encourage creativity, warmth, learning and connection. We at Mcor also believe that paper holds an important place the 3D printing industry – offering low cost, safe, eco-friendly and superior colour quality – a package unique to Mcor and one that we believe will help democratise innovation making 3D printing accessible to the masses.
The invention of paper in our history marks a milestone in every other progress and improvement known to man so there is no reason why it does not continue to do so – a paper 2.0!
So here’s to a world #PoweredByPaper !
